Hello, Oscar

My Favorite Oscar Moments:

  1. Lady Gaga’s incredible tribute to The Sound of Music (only complete by the presence of the wonderful Julie Andrews).
  2. Watching Eddie Redmayne’s adorable Best Actor acceptance speech.
  3. The Lego Oscar.
  4. The moving beauty that was Glory.
  5. Birdman taking home the big prize (exciting, but not clip worthy).

So, why mention the Oscars in a blog all about reading, writing, and editing? It’s a fair question, but I believe the answer is a simple one: movies are stories. And great movies have great characters, plots, and dialogue. Part of how I learn how to write stories is to watch great stories.

My challenge for you: watch an Oscar-nominated film and take some notes. Even the best can learn a thing or two.
